Why You Shouldn't Cancel Your Family Photos Because of Rain
If rain is in the forecast for your family photo session, your first instinct might be to cancel. As a Cobourg family photographer, I completely understand. Everyone hopes for golden sunshine and clear skies.
But sometimes, Mother Nature has other plans—and those plans can be even more beautiful.
Recently, I photographed a wonderful family who didn't mind getting a little wet. When we arrived, it was raining, so they popped on their raincoats while we waited for the weather to settle. Instead of worrying about the forecast, they laughed together, explored the location, and trusted the process.
Then something magical happened.
Right in the middle of the session, the rain stopped, the clouds began to part, and we were treated to the most beautiful, soft light. The fields glowed, the sky became dramatic, and the images turned out even more stunning than we could have planned. If you looked through their gallery today, you would never guess the session started in the rain.
Rain Often Creates the Best Light
One of the biggest secrets photographers know is that overcast skies are actually perfect for portraits.
Clouds soften the sunlight, creating beautiful, even light that is flattering on every face. Colours become richer, skin tones look natural, and everyone can relax without squinting into the sun.
Some of the Best Memories Happen Unexpectedly
Children don't care if the weather is perfect.
They remember cuddling with Mom and Dad, running through the grass, giggling together, and simply enjoying the moment. Those authentic interactions create photographs that feel genuine and tell your family's story.
How to Prepare for a Rainy Family Session
If there's a chance of rain, here's how to make the most of it:
- Bring a clear umbrella. They photograph beautifully and allow light to shine through while keeping everyone dry.
- Pack lightweight raincoats to wear while we're waiting for showers to pass.
- Wear shoes or boots you're comfortable walking in, even if the ground is a little damp.
- Bring a towel and an extra pair of socks for little ones.
- Most importantly, come with an adventurous spirit. When parents embrace the unexpected, children do too.
When We Will Reschedule
Your family's safety always comes first. If there's heavy rain, thunderstorms, or unsafe weather, we'll happily find another date.
But if the forecast calls for light rain or scattered showers, don't be too quick to cancel. Weather can change in minutes, and some of my favourite sessions as a Cobourg family photographer have started with raindrops and ended with breathtaking light.
Sometimes the most unforgettable family photos happen when we let go of perfect expectations and simply enjoy being together.
Trust the weather, trust the process, and let the memories unfold.
