There’s something so special about photographing a family exactly as they are — a little wild, a little messy, and completely connected.
For this Durham Region family lifestyle session, we headed to a small family farm with two parents, two energetic young boys, their dogs, and plenty of room to simply be a family.
Instead of asking everyone to stand and smile at the camera, we let the boys do what they do best: play.
There was baseball in the yard, games of tag, climbing over fences, cuddling with their dogs, and plenty of exploring. They even helped feed the chickens and spent time watering plants in the greenhouse. These little everyday moments became some of my favourite photographs from their session.
And while I absolutely love photographing the whole family together, as a motherhood photographer, I’m always looking for those quiet moments between mom and her children.
A hand resting on a little shoulder. A boy running into his mom’s arms. Mom watching her boys play from across the yard. The way she bends down to help, laughs at their antics, or gathers them close.
Because these are the moments I want moms to remember.
Motherhood moves so quickly. The little boys who need you for everything eventually become big boys who are racing ahead, and one day you’ll wish you could step back into this exact season for just a moment.
That’s why I approach family photography differently. I want your session to feel less like a photoshoot and more like a day in your family’s life — full of movement, connection, personality, and the beautiful chaos that comes with raising children.
Lifestyle Family Session Ideas for Every Season
You don’t need a perfect location or elaborate activity for beautiful family photographs. Some of the best sessions happen when families are simply doing things they already love.
Spring:
Plant flowers together, visit a garden centre, splash in puddles, explore a local farm, pick wildflowers, or spend the afternoon gardening.
Summer:
Have a backyard baseball game, run through the sprinkler, go berry picking, explore a farm, have a picnic, ride bikes, chase fireflies, or spend an evening at the beach.
Fall:
Go apple or pumpkin picking, wander through a forest, rake leaves and jump in them, bake something together, visit a farm, carve a pumpkin, or take a cozy walk through the changing leaves.
Winter:
Build a snowman, go sledding, make snow angels, decorate the Christmas tree, bake cookies, snuggle up by the fireplace, or have a cozy morning at home in your pyjamas.
The goal isn't to create a picture-perfect day.
The goal is to photograph the season of life you're actually in.
If you're looking for a Durham Region family photographer who wants to capture more than posed smiles — someone who will document the connection between you and your children, the way motherhood feels right now, and all those little moments you never want to forget — lifestyle family photography might be exactly what you're looking for.
Because someday, you'll want to remember more than what your children looked like.
You'll want to remember how it felt to be their mom.
