Why Golden Hour Is Worth It for Family Photos | Durham Region Family Photographer
If you've ever looked through a family photo gallery and wondered why the light looks so soft, warm, and dreamy, there's a good chance those images were taken during golden hour.
As a Durham Region family photographer, golden hour is one of my favourite times to photograph families because it creates beautiful, natural light that simply can't be replicated at other times of the day.
But I know what many parents are thinking:
"That sounds lovely, but isn't that close to my child's bedtime?"
The short answer? Yes, sometimes it is. And while that can feel intimidating, I promise that golden hour family sessions are often worth the little bit of schedule flexibility.
What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the period of time just before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky. Instead of harsh overhead sunlight, the light becomes soft, warm, and flattering.
This type of light helps create:
Beautiful skin tones
Soft shadows
Warm, glowing colours
A dreamy and timeless look
Less squinting from bright sunlight
It's the kind of light that helps create those emotional, storytelling images that families love hanging on their walls for years to come.
Why Golden Hour Creates Better Family Photos
One of the biggest challenges with daytime photography is harsh sunlight. Bright midday sun can create strong shadows under the eyes, cause squinting, and make everyone feel uncomfortable.
During golden hour, the light becomes much softer and more forgiving.
Children can move freely, parents can focus on connecting with their family, and the session feels relaxed rather than rushed.
As a Durham Region family photographer, I find that golden hour allows families to focus less on posing and more on simply spending time together.
Those genuine moments often become the most treasured images.
But What About Young Children?
This is probably the number one concern parents have when booking a golden hour session.
The good news is that many young children do surprisingly well during evening sessions.
Being outdoors naturally gives children room to explore, run, cuddle, and play. Instead of asking them to sit perfectly still, I encourage movement and connection.
A few ways to help make golden hour work with little ones include:
Let Them Nap Later
If possible, adjust nap schedules slightly on session day so your child has a little extra energy for the evening.
Bring Snacks
Simple, non-messy snacks and water can be lifesavers before and after the session.
Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
Children are often more cooperative when they know what to expect. Tell them you're going on a family adventure or exploring a beautiful field together.
Don't Stress About Perfect Behaviour
Some of the best photographs happen during real moments. Hugs, giggles, cuddles, and even a few silly moments often tell your family's story better than perfect smiles ever could.
The Magic Happens in the Last Few Minutes
One thing many families don't realize is that the most beautiful light often appears during the final 15 to 20 minutes before sunset.
The sky becomes softer, the colours become richer, and everything takes on a warm glow.
These are often the images that parents fall in love with when they receive their gallery.

Whether we're exploring a golden sunflower field in Bowmanville, walking along the shoreline in Cobourg, enjoying a conservation area in Courtice, or finding a quiet country location near Port Hope, golden hour helps create timeless family photographs filled with warmth and connection.
If you're looking for a Durham Region family photographer who focuses on candid, storytelling images and helping families feel comfortable in front of the camera, I'd love to help you create memories during the most beautiful light of the day.
Because years from now, you won't remember the slightly later bedtime.
You'll remember the way your child held your hand, the laughter you shared, and the golden summer evening you spent together.
